Finding the Few: Some Outstanding Mysteries of the Battle of Britain Investigated and Solved
1940 in the skies over Britain was a time of courage, heroism and extreme danger. Many men gave their lives to keep our island free and some disappeared into the summer sky with no trace of them ever being found. This remarkable book records the life of a dozen of these pilots shot down and killed but who remained missing for decades until diligent research and searches primarily by the author brought identification to them and closure to their families. Each case represents a fascinating human story of humor, drama, love and tragedy; and each one represents a startling tale of detective work and remarkable coincidences, ofttimes revealing controversy.

Flying Aces: Aviation Art of World War II
The "Ace" had become a new kind of hero by the time the skies became a primary battlefield during World War II--and the dogfights that ensued became more deeply personal than those on the ground below. These inspired paintings capture both the courage and tenacity of these men and their machines in more than 70 works, painstakingly recreated by artists in vivid detail. They tell harrowing stories of wounded Robert S. Johnson, tailed by a Luftwaffe full of deadly purpose--but without ammunition--or Germany's legendary Erich Hartmann, the first fighter pilot to down 300 enemy aircraft. All painted by respected aviation art masters, including Stan Stokes, Robert Taylor, and Roy Grinnell, they are enhanced with archival photographs of legendary Aces and their planes and battles. It's an authoritative tribute to the men of the skies--and a great gift for any aficionado of aviation or military history.

Flying Boats and Amphibians Since 1945
It may come as a surprise to learn that some 1,700 multi-engined military and commercial flying boats and amphibians have been built since 1945. The development of compact, reliable and economical turbo-prop engines in recent years has given the flying boat and amphibian a new lease of life, not only by extending the lives of some types by replacing existing piston engines, but also by encouraging new designs that are able to compete favourably with landplanes in terms of economy while retaining their unique ability to land on water if and when necessary. There are currently more than 350 multi-engined types operating worldwide in the search and rescue (SAR) and inshore maritime reconnaissance (MR) roles with the military, the commercial transport of people and supplies in remote areas, and fighting fires. This book describes 12 major multi-engined flying boats and amphibians that have been produced, albeit in small numbers in some cases, in 7 different countries since 1945. All have either served with operational military units or have been sold to commercial operators, with which many of them continue to serve to this day.

Flying Tankers: Gas Stations in the Sky
This little paperback photo book is worthwhile for tanker veterans, and anyone interested in aerial refueling. Published in 1989, so some of it is of historic interest now. Good photos and decent color reproduction for a 25 year old book. Recommended if this is in your area of interest -- certainly brought back memories for me. Note that the "perfect" binding is somewhat fragile.

Flying under Fire, Volume Two: More Aviation Tales from the Second World War
Building on the success of the previous volume, Flying Under Fire, Volume Two, features nine more personal accounts from Canadian pilots who flew in the Second World War. From training camps to posting across Canada, Britain, Europe, and North Africa, these stories capture the excitement, fear, hope, and dread of war-time service, and are all told with the vivid detail of first-hand experience. The contributors to this volume are a distinguished group: two are Air Commodores, three are Hall of Fame members, one has an Order of Canada and a McKee Trophy, and five have Distinguished Flying Crosses. Some, including Art Wahlroth and Bob Fowler, flew bombing missions in the war, many were fighters, and others, like Bill Carr and Jack Winship, performed reconnaissance duties, but all brought back tales of incredible resourcefulness and courage in the face of danger. And central to all their stories are the planes - Mosquitoes, Spitfires, Wellingtons, Meteors, Mitchells, and Kittyhawks fill the pages, each exhibiting the special quirks and personalities the pilots came to know and trust. Flying Under Fire, Volume Two, pays tribute to the roughly 35,000 Canadian airmen involved in the Second World War, honouring their contributions and preserving their stories for generations to come.

Flying Under Fire: Canadian Fliers Recall the Second World War
Thousands of young Canadians volunteered for service in the RCAF, RAF, and other air services during WWII, risking their lives to protect others. The airforce played a critical part in the Allied victory and the stories of those brave men and women are as powerful and gripping as they were sixty years ago. The stories collected in Flying Under Fire were originally published in the Canadian Aviation Historical Society Journal and are the first-hand accounts of pilots, trainees, and ground crew who recall the danger, excitement, tragedy, and victory of serving their country. They bring an immediacy and a special brand of grim humour to their tales, capturing the hopes, fears, and spirit of the times. This book, made possible by the survivors of a long and difficult war, is dedicated to the memory of the 14,541 air personnel who did not return.

Forced March to Freedom
The prisoners of Stalag Luft III endured two forced marches across Germany in the final months of World War II. This is an illustrated diary recorded at the scene. Canadian, Robert Buckham was employed as a graphic artist in several studios in Toronto and as an art director in a Montreal advertising agency prior to enlisting in the RCAF. Twice rejected for aircrew because he was too tall, he was finally accepted for pilot training in May of 1941. He was posted overseas in early 1942 and eventually joined 428 Squadron, 6 Group, based in Dalton, Yorkshire, where he flew Wellington X bombers over Germany and German-occupied France. His aircraft was downed on April 8, 1943, on his tenth operational flight. He and his entire crew were captured. Imprisoned in Stalag Luft 3, Sagan, Germany, where he recorded the scene in small drawings and paintings, which were eventually rolled and carried on two forced marches in a tube created from soldered Klimcans. The forced marches brought him to Stalag 8B, Lubeck, where he was finally liberated.

GMC CCKW 2 ½-ton Truck (Walk Around: 5718)
As war spread in Asia and war clouds gathered over Europe in the late 1930s, the US Army Quartermaster Corps set out to acquire a tough, new 2-1/2 ton tactical truck that would be up to the task of hauling modern artillery as well as troops and supplies. In the end General Motors filled that need with its all-wheel drive CCKW truck. The first examples rolled off GMC's Pontiac, Michigan, assembly line in February 1941. By September 1942, the Chevrolet plant in St. Louis, Missouri, also started manufacturing the CCKW. This volume is packed with detailed photographs and highlights modifications through the years of its service - a wooden truck bed to save on precious steel, an open cab to allow for more cargo room in ship holds, 2 designs for axles, negative electrical system and a winch that was installed on a third of the trucks. Covers long- and short-wheelbase versions, plus cargo dump body types. Don t miss this close-up look at the truck that carried US men and materiel to victory on 3 continents in WWII! Illustrated with more than 190 photographs, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings.

Graphic War: The Secret Aviation Drawings and Illustrations of World War II
Graphic War is a superb collection of top-secret drawings, including training manuals and colorful wartime posters, from World War II. They were brilliantly created from a few downed aircraft, but mainly from pilots' views of the enemy in the air, during missions. Almost all of the material was originally listed as "restricted -- official use only" and previously unpublished in any form. The cutaway drawings of the aircraft and airborne weaponry were critical to the war efforts of Allied and Axis forces alike. As there was little intelligence available to pilots about the design, power and armament on opposing aircraft, these "graphic transcriptions" were essential. Many of the graphic artists and technical illustrators employed by the Allies, and most employed by the Axis powers, remain anonymous. Their work survives on these pages, however, to provide rare and unique insight into war room strategy and the air- and ground-crew trainee classroom. Aviation enthusiasts, modelers, illustrators, artists and anyone with an interest in World War II history will find Graphic War a compelling inside look at the war fought in the sky.

Guns Across the River: The Battle of the Windmill, 1838
In 1838, seeing political unrest in Canada as an opportunity, American extremist groups invaded at several places, thinking Canadians would arise and join them to "throw off the British yoke." One of the most ambitious expeditions was the attack in November 1838 when hundreds of members of a secret organization, the Patriot Hunters, sailed down the St. Lawrence River and landed near Prescott, Ontario, where they occupied a stone windmill. It took five days of bloody fighting by British regulars and Canadian militia to defeat the invasion and capture the invaders. The prisoners were taken to Fort Henry in Kingston and tried, resulting in 11 executions and 40 deportations to Australian penal colonies. The Windmill stands today as a national historic site. The book is well illustrated with about 100 maps, archival pictures and original artwork by renowned marine artist Peter Rindlisbacher.

Guns of the Regiment
Since Confederation, the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery has used more than 130 types of gun, howitzer, mortar, and rocket. Each gun was purchased or manufactured to fill a role in the defence of Canada, or in support of Canadian foreign policy. It then served with the Regiment, and was modified, modernized, or upgraded as necessary. Finally, it was transferred into the reserves, and later, a few retired in museums or as monuments. "Guns of the Regiment" will be an invaluable resource to anyone with an interest in the weapons used by the Canadian artillery. Each gun has its own section, detailing its development and its career in the Regiment at home and overseas. Special sections deal with the manufacture of the guns, the organization and operation of the Regiment, and the mechanization of the artillery in the 1930s. Every gun is illustrated by at least one photograph, many of which have never been previously published.

Halifax at War: Searchlights, Squadrons and Submarines 1939-1945
From early September, 1939 Halifax was at war. When the war began, people gathered along the waterfront to watch the fleet of the Royal Canadian Navy leave. For the next six years, the city was uniquely affected by the war's events. Halifax at War explores this transformation of the city and civilian life, making use of a rich blend of historical, biographical and archival sources. Bill Naftel describes the incredible demands placed upon the city due to the war -- which far exceeded any other city in Canada. Halifax's infrastructure was barely able to cope as thousands of soldiers and sailors streamed through the city and thousands more arrived for war-related work. At first the war was welcomed for the jobs it created and the prosperity it brought, but soon crowding and inflated prices proved a trial for native Haligonians as well as thousands of temporary residents. Reflecting new insights derived from primary documents, this lively history offers a new perspective on the impact of the war on Canada and Canadians, and on the many ways in which Halifax played a unique role in supporting Canada's contribution to the allied war effort.
