How to Swap Ford Modular Engines into Mustangs, Torinos and More
How to Swap Ford Modular Engines into Mustangs, Torinos and More
The Ford modular engine is a popular swap for 1964-1/2-1973 Mustangs, Fox-Body Mustangs, trucks, hot rods, and other muscle cars because these high-tech engines provide exceptional performance and improved economy compared to their dated counterparts. Found in Mustangs and other Fords since the 1990s, installing a modular motor in a classic Ford infuses new technology and all the benefits that come with it into a classic car. Modular engines feature an overhead cam design that has massive horsepower potential, and are offered in 4.6-, 5.0-, 5.2- 5.4-, and 5.8-liter iterations. These high-tech 2-, 3-, and 4-valve engines are readily available as a crate engine, from salvage yards, and in running cars. This engine design has a large physical footprint, and swapping the engine requires a thorough plan, using the proper tools and facilities. Author Dave Stribling specializes in modular engine swaps, and expertly guides you through each crucial step of the engine transplant process. Because of the large physical size, many components, such as brake boosters, steering rods and boxes, and other underhood components, may need repositioning or modification to co-exist in the engine bay. Stribling covers motor-mount selection and fabrication, suspension and chassis modifications, aftermarket suspension options, firewall and transmission tunnel modifications, engine management and wiring procedures, fuel systems, exhaust systems, electrical mods and upgrades, and much more. Many older Ford muscle and performance cars are prime candidates for a modular swap; however, shock towers protrude into the engine bay of these cars, so modifications are necessary to fit the engine into the car, which is also covered here. Swapping the engine and transmission into a muscle car or truck requires specialized processes, and this insightful, explanatory, and detailed instruction is found only in this book. If you are considering swapping one of these high-tech engines into a non-original chassis, this book is a vital component to the process.

Hubert Platt: Fast Fords of the Georgia Shaker
Hubert Platt: Fast Fords of the Georgia Shaker
Webster's Dictionary lists the term showman as "a notably spectacular, dramatic, or effective performer." In the art of drag racing, Hubert Platt checked all boxes. Known as the "Georgia Shaker," Platt cut his motoring teeth on the long straightaways and twisty back roads of South Carolina while bootlegging moonshine. After a run-in with the law in 1958, Platt transferred his driving skills from illegal activity to sanctioned drag racing and began one of the most dominant runs in drag racing history until his retirement in 1977. After stints in 1957, 1938, and 1962 Chevrolets, Platt's next ride was a Z11 Impala, which carried his first "Georgia Shaker" moniker. Once Chevrolet pulled out of sanctioned racing, Platt found a new home with Ford for 1964 and remained there until he hung up his helmet. Some of the cars he campaigned became icons in their own right. His factory-backed and personal machines included a 1963 Z11 Impala, 1964 Thunderbolt, 1965 Falcon, 1966 Mustang Funny Car, 1967 Fairlane 427, 1968-1/2 Cobra Jet, 1969 CJ Mustang, 1970 427 SOHC Mustang, and 1970 Boss 429 Maverick. A 1986 NHRA Hall of Fame member, Platt's lasting legacy on the sport can't be denied. Whether he was launching his Falcon with the door open, conducting a Ford Drag Team seminar, or posting low E.T. at the 1967 US Nationals in his Fairlane, Platt's imprint on drag racing was all-encompassing. His son and biggest fan, Allen Platt, shares his dad's iconic career in, Hubert Platt: Fast Fords of the "Georgia Shaker"!

Hudson Automobiles 1934-1957 Photo Archive
Hudson emphasized performance when promoting its cars and entered speed and endurance events to prove it. It always did well in these events but its shining hour as a performance car came near the end of its history. A powerful engine, a low center of gravity, excellent suspension and steering combined in the Hornet to make it unbeatable on the stock car racing circuit from 1951 through 1954. Unfortunately, racing success did not translate into sufficient sales to keep the company healthy and in 1954 Hudson was acquired by Nash to form American Motors. Nevertheless, Hudson left a legacy of design innovations that will be long remembered.

But the H3 has also been made more accessible to more people and to even more places.

George Hurst was a hot rodder at heart, but he was also a visionary, an innovator, a brilliant promoter, and particularly skilled at building alliances. Hurst developed and marketed a high-performance line of shifters that would lead the industry and be the cornerstone of the company. After forming an alliance with Anco Industries, Hurst marketed and sold more than 100 speed parts, which included shifters, heads, wheels, and many other parts, and eventually the Hurst catalog became the source for high-performance parts in the1960s and 1970s. Il Cavallino Nel Cuore: Autobiography of a designer
Il Cavallino Nel Cuore: Autobiography of a designer
For the first time, one of the major names in Italian car design tells his story from the beginning; from when he made his first sketches on paper, unbeknown to his parents and not only of cars, to reaching a point at which his name became synonymous with some of the best known and most important cars on the international front. In his 23-year career at Pininfarina, Leonardo Fioravanti, who was first a designer and architect, then managing director and director general of 'Studi & Ricerche' department, created some of the most beautiful Ferraris of all time; they ranged from the 1965 250 LM sports coupe Speciale to the immortal 1968 Daytona through to the 1975 308 GTB and GTS and the 1984 288 GTO, as well as the P5 and P6 of 1968. While continuing his Ferrari essay during his Pininfarina career, Fioravanti also guided the creation of numerous other projects, among them the Dino road car, the 1980 Pinin four-door prototype and went on to the 1984 Testarossa and the 1987 F40. He worked for the Fiat Group from 1988 until 1991, during which time he took on the roles of deputy director general of Ferrari, later became responsible for advanced design CRF and then head of the Fiat Styling Centre. In 1987, he founded Fioravanti srl, an architectural studio, and in 1991 he extended his services to industry, in particular the design of means of transport. Images of an epoch, designs from his own personal archive never previously seen and, above all, a passionate first person account. Those are the key elements of this outstanding book which, through the creations of Leonardo Fioravanti, covers over 50 years of the history of automobile style and culture.

Illustrated Dictionary of Automobile Body Styles
Illustrated Dictionary of Automobile Body Styles
Today's cars fit a fairly small number of body types--sedan, coupe, station wagon, SUV, hatchback, and a few others. The meanings of even these familiar terms have changed over the decades as automotive design has evolved. Along the way a much greater number of earlier body types have fallen out of use and become historical curiosities. Who today can identify a charabanc, a dos-a-dos, or even a phaeton? This dictionary with clear line drawings defines all distinct body types ever applied to automobiles, from the early days when many were closely derived from established types of horse-drawn vehicles ("cars" in their original sense). It explains subtype designations and distinctions between similar types, comments on when and where individual body types were popular, traces how terms have taken on different meanings in different countries or time periods, and clarifies the use or misuse of various terms and designations.

Improve & Modify VW GTI & Golf (Including Rabbit & Jetta)
Improve & Modify VW GTI & Golf (Including Rabbit & Jetta)
This is a book for Golf and Jetta owners who want to add some of their own individuality to what is already an outstanding car in its own right. Many of the sections in this book are about how to carry out your own mods on a DIY basis, while others set out to show what is available and what the specialists can do to your car for you; the choice is yours. Naturally enough, owners are drawn to their Golfs and Jettas because of their cars' build quality and their sheer dependability, but the cars are also renowned for their sportiness and verve on the road, even the 1300cc models being capable of quite a respectable turn of speed and having cornering ability and handling that make them a pleasure to drive. And when you get up to the level of a GTi, the levels of performance are a revelation to those not used to scorching acceleration and pin-point precision steering. Yet, at the same time, Golf and Jetta GTis have an ease of use and comfort that would put many an everyday 'shopping' car to shame. In spite of all that, no-one would claim that Golfs and Jettas, in the form in which they leave the factory, could ever be unique. It's up to the individual owner to stamp his or her own hallmark onto the car in one of the many hundreds of ways suggested by this book. Volkswagen themselves are more than pleased to help the owner do so in a responsible manner, which is why they have given their invaluable assistance and advice in many parts of this book. The range of improvements and modifications that you can make to your Golf and Jetta is vast. Among the simplest are styling stripes for the bodywork, mats for the interior and performance-boosting exhaust pipe swaps for the engine. For more serious modifications, you can buy body styling kits from your Volkswagen dealer (or have them fitted there, Recaro seats from the same source, or go to Turbo Technics and give your Golf incredible acceleration - at a price. All of these modifications, and more, are included in this book. We have not pretended that everything shown here can be DIY fitted; indeed, we recommend that some of it should not be for reasons of safety or specialist skills required. Improvements and modifications to Golfs and Jettas cover a huge field and we hope we have done it justice. We certainly could not have done so without the close assistance of all the specialists and suppliers shown in this book. In every case, we selected the specialist company which we believe has the most to offer the Golf and Jetta owner in their particular field; that's why you'll recognise some of the biggest 'names' in the business in this book, alongside some less well-known names who deserve to be better known. We hope and believe that the combination of top specialists, experienced motoring writing and enthusiastic Golf ownership has brought you a book that you, as a Golf or Jetta owner, will want to turn to again and again.

In the Blink of an Eye: Dale, Daytona, and the Day that Changed Everything
In the Blink of an Eye: Dale, Daytona, and the Day that Changed Everything
There was one lap to go in the 2001 Daytona 500, NASCAR's most celebrated event. Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were running one-two. Junior's legendary dad, the driver race fans called "The Intimidator," was close behind in third, blocking anyone who might try to pass. Waltrip couldn't stop thinking about all the times he'd struggled to stay ahead--and the 462 NASCAR Cup races he'd lost without a single win. He'd been a race-car driver all his adult life, following in the footsteps of his brother Darrell, a three-time NASCAR champion. And his losing streak was getting more painful every race. But this day, he knew, could be different. He was driving for Dale Earnhardt now, racing as a team with his close friend and mentor. Yet as his car roared toward the finish line, ending that losing streak once and for all, Waltrip had no clue that the greatest triumph of his life could get mired in terrible tragedy. This is the story of that fateful afternoon in Daytona, a day whose echoes are still heard today. But the story begins years earlier in a small town in Kentucky, with a boy who dreamed of racing cars, a boy who was determined to go from go-karts to the highest levels of NASCAR. For the first time ever, Michael Waltrip tells the full, revealing story of how he got to Daytona, what happened there, and the huge impact it had on so many in the racing world. He reveals for the first time how his own life changed as he dealt with guilt, faced his grief, and searched for the fortitude to climb into a race car again. It's an inspiring and powerful story, told with Michael's trademark humor, honesty, and irreverence. It's a story of family, fulfillment, and redemption--and well-earned victory in the end.
