David Vizard’s How to Super Tune and Modify Holley Carburetors
The Holley carburetor is an icon in the performance industry. Thirty, forty, even fifty years ago, if you looked under the hood of any modified or performance car, you more than likely would discover a Holley carburetor lurking there. Often, many enthusiast's first modification is swapping out the factory induction system for a new Holley 4-barrel carb and intake manifold. While many of today's modern cars have moved past carburetors and into high-tech fuel-injection systems, most cars from the highly collectible eras are still running carburetors. Carbs are comparatively inexpensive, highly tunable, and do not require laptops, expensive tuning equipment, or computers to function. And by far, the most popular carb still in use is the Holley carb. In David Vizard's How to Super Tune and Modify Holley Carburetors, best selling author Vizard explains the science, the function, and most important, the tuning expertise required to get your Holley carburetor to perform its best for your performance application, whether it's street, strip, supercharging, or race applications. Day One: An Automotive Journalist's Muscle-Car Memoir
Day One: An Automotive Journalist’s Muscle-Car Memoir
Automotive journalist Marty Schorr recalls life on the front line in the classic muscle car era, thrashing brand-new cars that would one day become million-dollar collector vehicles. Most muscle-car books celebrate beautifully-restored vehicles surrounded by hard facts; Day One tells the real story from the point-of-view of one of the period's most respected automotive journalists, Marty Schorr. For the first time, you'll get a unique perspective on what it was like to actually drive, race, and otherwise thrash what are some of today's most valuable collector cars. CARS, the iconic magazine Marty wrote and edited didn't rely on industry advertising for revenue. Instead, the magazine made money the old fashioned way, from newsstand sales, leaving it able to be honest and frank in its coverage of high-performance street cars. CARS magazine reported on both Day stock and modified cars, cars the traditional magazines wouldn't touch, like the ultra-high-performance vehicles from companies like Baldwin-Motion, Yenko Chevrolet, Nickey Chevrolet, Royal Pontiac, and Tasca Ford. Prepare yourself for Day One to cover the most important cars of a given year, such as: Pontiac's 1962-1963 lightweight Super-Duty 421 street and Swiss Cheese models Chevrolet's 1963 big-block 427 Mystery Motor and ZL-1 Impala. De Dion Bouton: First Automobile Giant
De Dion Bouton: First Automobile Giant
The history of lesser known car manufacturers that no longer exist, though they were the best-sellers in their time, is generaly limited to a paragraph. This wonderful book on the DeDion-Bouton, #6 in the Ballantie series on the "History of the Car", is a treasure at 159 pages long. The paperback covers the 20 year rise of this most popular car and the reasons for its 20 year decline. It is plentifully illustrated with black-and-white photos, drawings and diagrams of car parts and many, possibly all, models. Nowhere else have I been able to find anything in literature or at local musea that might help me identify the model or the reason why and when my great-grandfather bought a DeDion-Bouton in the 1890's. If the others in this Balantine Series are as exhaustive, they make a great read/gift for the car enthusiast.

De Lorean Gold Portfolio 1977-1995
De Lorean Gold Portfolio 1977-1995
From a motoring enthusiast’s point, the sports car which former Pontiac supremo John De Lorean drew up to sell to Americans was a fascinating machine. The gullwing doors lost appeal when electrical failures prevented them from opening & the unpainted stainless steel body panels proved far from stainless in practice. However, the Giugiaro design is still attractive and with only around 4,000 cars built still attracts attention. This is a book of contemporary road & comparison tests, technical and specification data, engineering background, history, De Lorean interview, and company history.

Details – Legendary Sports Cars Up Close: 1965-1969
Ferrari 330P4, Ford GT40, Chaparral 2D, Porsche 917, Mirage M1, BMW Monti, Abarth, Alpine, Lola, Maserati, Matra, Serenissima - every one of these sports cars and prototypes is a legend today. In the Sixties, they epitomised the frontier of what was technically possible - and what at times proved not to be possible. In the quest for critical tenths of a second, engine power grew to unimagined levels while aerodynamics became the catchword with engineers inventing some formidable tricks in the wind tunnels. At the same time, tubular chassis, monocoques, bodywork and even brake discs were being created from increasingly exotic materials. The mission was to win the World and European Championships that included famous races like Le Mans and Daytona plus other racing classics at Monza, Spa and the Nurburgring as well as in mountain hill-climbs. This book delves into the details of sixty exceptional race cars of the period that tackled the World Sports Car Championship and the explosive sprints of the European Hill Climb Championship between 1965 and 1969. From the Abarth OT Sport Spider to the Porsche 917, they all reveal their stories embellished by ca. 350 by now largely unpublished photos. "Details - Legendary sports cars up close" is a declaration of love for these automotive treasures and their extreme technologies that is revealed by taking a very close look under their exotic bodies.

Detroit Muscle: Factory Lightweights and Purpose-Built Muscle Cars
Detroit Muscle: Factory Lightweights and Purpose-Built Muscle Cars
The muscle car era, and the era that immediately preceded it, are a unique window in time; it is one that we will not likely see again. Post-war USA was a place where people wanted to move on from the horrors of conflict, to embrace an era of peace, and to pursue, well, all sorts of things. A whole generation was entering a new prosperity, with home ownership on the rise, gainful employment increasing, the building of suburbs, and a new interstate system connecting everyone. That all helped increase our dependence upon, and in turn, deepen our love affair with the automobile. It started in the 1950s, when automakers realized that if they made their cars more powerful than brand X and won races on the weekends as well, sales would follow those victories into the dealership. Not everybody was enamored with all this new-found performance, however, and throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, a struggle developed between building faster automobiles and appearing responsible and promoting the cause of safety. This led to racing participation on an all-out corporate level, followed by voluntary self-imposed and publicized bans, back-door cheating on said bans, and then investing in performance again. A byproduct of all this activity was some really fascinating and exciting cars. It began with standard-chassis cars growing bigger and including more powerful engines. Then they graduated to being lighter, putting big engines into mid-size chassis (muscle cars), and building race cars that barely resembled anything on the street. Detroit Muscle: Factory Lightweights and Purpose-Built Muscle Cars follows the evolution of the fastest, most powerful, and exciting vehicles of the era, in both drag racing and NASCAR. From early Hudson Hornets, to the birth of the Hemi, to aluminum and fiberglass panel sedans, to lightweight special-order muscle cars ready to race from the factory.

Detroit Speed's How to Build a Pro Touring Car
Detroit Speed’s How to Build a Pro Touring Car
Trends in automotive modification come and go; some are outlandish, some are practical. Currently, the trend is Pro Touring. While it's expensive, it definitely leans toward the practical. It was originally a name used for GM cars, but "Pro Touring" has come to mean a style for all cars from many years. It is essentially the art of adding modern technology to aged designs to create cars that start, stop, drive, handle, and behave like modern performance cars. You can do this in many ways and choose from many suppliers. Detroit Speed is at the forefront of the Pro Touring movement. The company is in a unique position to design and manufacture parts; they also build cars and test the parts for their effectiveness on the street and track. Kyle and Stacy Tucker have used their considerable engineering skill and marketing savvy to create a unique company that leads the Pro Touring movement. You will discover the history of Detroit Speed and how they design performance parts. Learn-to-install sections cover front subframe and rear suspension assemblies as well as upgrades to wheel tubs, brakes, fuel system, driveline, cooling system, and more; also included is an LS swap. The featured cars are customer builds as well as Detroit Speed test cars including a number of different Chevrolet products, a 1966 Mustang, and a 1969 Charger. Deuce: The Original Hot Rod: 32x32
Deuce: The Original Hot Rod: 32×32
Ford's classic '32, equipped with a behemoth engine and modified for speed is everything a hot rod should be. They certainly don't make 'em like this anymore. We're talking about the car that launched the hot rod subculture: Ford's 1932 Deuce. With its stylish lines, timeless grille, and flowing fenders, Ford's Deuce coupe pretty much defines the term "hot rod." The breadth of creativity this classic design has inspired for generations of hot rod builders is on full display in Deuce. Ford's '32 was an immediate hit. By 1931, the Model A was obsolete in a marketplace where drivers wanted more style and power. The design goals for the '32 Ford could be summarized as "more": more cylinders, more horsepower, and more style. The resulting car achieved its objectives and then some. It was faster, more comfortable, more refined - a masterpiece of industrial design, yet still affordable. Henry Ford and his design team got it right. As the Deuce transitioned to the used car market, it drew the attention of those with a need for speed. Stripped down with an emphasis on performance, the Deuce became the bedrock of the burgeoning hot rod movement. To this day, it very much defines what a hot rod should look like. Hot rodders took Henry's master stroke to a whole other place, and Deuce stands as a tribute to their ongoing ingenuity.

Devin: The Man and His Cars
Devin: The Man and His Cars
Art Evans' relationship to Bill Devin is unique. From the time of the fifties, they were close friends as well as business associates. When Bill passed on in November 2000, Bill's widow asked Art to deliver the eulogy at the service. Bill Devin created a number of cars as well as the best-selling after-market fiberglass body. Bill's first car was the Devin Panhard, a limited-edition sports-racing car that won its class in the SCCA National Championship. In 1958, he created the fabled Devin SS, which was soon followed by the Devin D and the Devin C, an all-American sports car. All of these cars are described in great detail in this book. Some of the Devin after-market bodies were used on quite a few racing specials including Ak Miller's, that won its class six times in eight tries. Not just a car book, Devin's history is described in some detail as well as a few of those with whom he was associated.

Diesel Performance Handbook for Pickups and SUVs
Diesel Performance Handbook for Pickups and SUVs
With gas prices rising (always), alternative fuels look like an answer. Hybrids sound good, but what about the batteries? And fuel cells still seem to be pie-in-the-sky. Which leaves us with good old diesel. This book shows how to get the most out of the diesel engine, at a time when its fuel efficiency is almost as important as its massive torque. Although most diesel truck owners probably aren’t planning to break any land speed records, advances in diesel technology, such as ultra-low-sulfur fuel, high-pressure common-rail fuel injection, electronic fuel management and variable geometry turbocharging, are bringing diesel engines into the performance arena. And this book is the ideal guide for making your diesel engine perform--adapting intake and exhaust, torque converters, engine electronics, turbochargers, and much more.
