Jeep TJ 1997-2006: How to Build & Modify
Jeep TJ 1997-2006: How to Build & Modify
The Jeep CJ, the icon that started it all, is the most popular off-road vehicle of all time. The look, style, and functionality of the CJ made it instantly popular and recognizable the world over, in no doubt partly due to its military presence in World War II. The Jeep Wrangler platform had the difficult task of replacing the extremely popular CJ platform. Outwardly similar in appearance, the YJ, TJ, and JK that followed all had significant design improvements, as can be expected when a platform has a life span of more than five decades. The YJ was the first Chrysler release after it purchased AMC in the mid-1980s, and it was aimed at taming the original CJ for more comfort and, arguably, a larger audience. The TJ that followed next was an evolutionary update, significant in that it featured a coil spring suspension and the celebrated return of round headlights, for a more traditional look compared to the square lights of the YJ. In Jeep TJ 1997-2006: How to Build & Modify, everything you need to know about how to modify your TJ for off-road use is covered. Beginning with why you should choose a TJ for modification, Jeep expert Michael Hanssen takes you through all the different systems needing modification, including engine modifications and swaps, transmission swaps, transfer case and driveshafts modifications, axles and traction systems, suspensions and lifts, wheels, tires, brakes, chassis protection, electrical, and winches. Included in every chapter are step-by-step modification instructions to help walk you through the process. If you want to build a TJ for serious off-road trail use, or you just want a capable and great-looking Jeep for around town, this book has you covered.

Jeep Wrangler JK 2007-Present: Performance Upgrades
Jeep Wrangler JK 2007-Present: Performance Upgrades
Since its release in 2007, the JK has become wildly popular and nearly 1 million units have been sold in North America. With a wider track and longer wheelbase, the Wrangler JK is roomier, more comfortable, and delivers better on-road performance than its predecessor. However, it needs serious chassis, suspension, and drivetrain upgrades to tackle demanding off-road terrain and rock crawling. A full complement of heavy-duty suspension, chassis, steering, drivetrain, and high-performance engine parts has been developed for this platform. Co-authors Don Alexander and Quinn Thomas offer comprehensive guidance for making key modifications and selecting the best parts to transform your JK into a superior off-road performer. Lift kits from 1.75 to 5 inches are available, so you can fit off-road wheels and tires for exceptional traction. Suspension springs, specially calibrated coil-over shocks, and sway bars must work in concert to provide the correct suspension articulation and ride quality to scale obstacles and negotiate terrain. To increase durability and essential reliability, pitman arms, drop links, driveline parts, steering boxes, and skid plates are examined. Because the drivetrain must be ready for off-road service, the authors cover the most rugged and reliable axle assemblies available. Exhaust, intake, and electronic engine mapping upgrades make the Jeep 3.6- and 3.8-liter V-6 engines much more potent. It also includes how to swap GM LS and new Hemi engines into the JK for vastly improved performance. If you believe that paved roads are simply access-ways to the open range, you and your JK need this book. It contains the vital information to convert any mild-mannered street vehicle into an all-conquering off-road rig. Whether it's lift kits, wheels, tires, drivetrain, or suspension and engine parts, this volume provides detailed information, insightful guidance, and installation instructions, so you build an off-road JK to handle the toughest terrain.

Jeep Wrangler: 4x4 Performance Portfolio 1987-1999
Jeep Wrangler: 4×4 Performance Portfolio 1987-1999
This successor to the CJ Jeeps was designed for use as every day transport rather than as a utility vehicle. Nevertheless the Wrangler was still in the mould of the earlier vehicles having a basic open tub body with occasional seating for four although the chassis components were biased towards road use. The low-profiles tires improved the handling. The trend continued when the original YJ gave way to the redesigned TJ model in 1996. Coil springs were used for comfort and airbags came as standard. This is a book of contemporary road and comparison tests, specification, new model introductions, driver's impressions, long term tests, off road experience. Models covered include: YJ, Laredo, Sahara, Renegade, S, Islander, Sport, TJ, SE.

Jeep: The History of America's Greatest Vehicle
Jeep: The History of America’s Greatest Vehicle
The definitive, fully illustrated celebration of an auto manufacturer that paved its own way by going off-road. Few American vehicles, or vehicles made anywhere else in the world for that matter, are as universally iconic as the Jeep. From olive drab WWII military relics to the beloved Wrangler with its rear-mounted spare tire, open-air design, and telltale roll cage, the Jeep is a true classic. In Jeep: The History of America’s Greatest Vehicle, automotive writer Patrick R. Foster chronicles over 70 years of Jeep vehicle design and production. Beginning with the Jeep as a crucial component of the American World War II fleet, Foster expertly recounts the corporate shifts, financial struggles and successes, close calls, and—above all—the enduring machines that have carried Jeep from the early 1940s to its triumphant role as a modern-day embodiment of American perseverance. Three hundred color and black-and-white historical photos complement his expertly written narrative of Jeep’s entire history, reminding us that sometimes, the road less traveled was just waiting for the right truck.

Jeepster & Commando Limited Edition 1967-1973
Having been discontinued in 1948 the Jeepster name was revived in 1967. In the Mid-sixties the recreational vehicle market had blossomed and manufacturers were rapidly filling the void. The Jeepster was introduced as a blend of a street and off-road machine with extra lifestyle luxuries added to its specification. With the take-over by American Motors the bodywork received a cosmetic makeover. The Commando became the workhorse station wagon in its various guises. By 1972 the Jeepster name had again been dropped as the Commando lived on with a roadster, pickup and a station wagon. This is a book of contemporary road and comparison tests, technical information, buyer's guide, new model intro's, driver's impressions. Just '30s: 10 Years of Classics and Depression-Era Wonders
Just ’30s: 10 Years of Classics and Depression-Era Wonders
The 1930s might have been the greatest 10-year period in the history of the American automobile. Even in the face of a suffocating Depression, American cars continued to evolve with beautiful, streamlined designs that had never been seen before. General Motors began "face lifting" its vehicles with new styles for every model year. Hard-rubber rides were softened by balloon tires, impressive 16-cylinder engines began showing up under massive hoods and hydraulic brakes became the norm. The synchromesh transmission, independent suspension, heaters and radios made automotive journeys more comfortable than ever. It was truly a decade of advancement and achievement for U.S. car makers. In Just '30s, the publisher of Old Cars Weekly and OldCarsReport.com Price Guide celebrates this fabulous decade with a look back at the cars, and car companies, that gave us such great memories.

Kaiser-Frazer 1947-1955 Photo Archive
Kaiser-Frazer 1947-1955 Photo Archive
It was like a marriage made in heaven, the coming together of two great minds to create an all-new car. Henry J Kaiser and Joseph Washington Frazer, strong-willed men of vision, boldly decided to take on America's Big Three automakers. Hoping to position their Kaiser-Frazer Corporation in the big leagues of auto manufacturers they would launch a radical new car to capture the public's imagination and produce it in unheard-of quantities. Their plan nearly worked. This new book by veteran auto writer Patrick Foster - America's spokesman for independent brand cars - tells the full story of Kaiser-Frazer's struggle to succeed in an industry that killed so many competitors. Heartbreaking yet uplifting, it is an allegory of men and automobiles during perhaps the most exciting era the industry has ever known.

Kaiser-Frazer Limited Edition 1946-1955
Kaiser-Frazer Limited Edition 1946-1955
The Kaiser-Frazer automotive adventure would have to go down in history as one of the greatest "lost causes" of all time. Born out of the optimism of victory in World War II, the two magnates pooled their resources to take on the Establishment in Detroit. That they gambled and lost is now history and the automobile world is the richer for their efforts. Both Henry Kaiser and Joe Frazer had made a fortune out of armament supplies for the war and decided to tackle General Motors, Ford and Chrysler head-on once the conflict was over. As Preston Tucker found out to his cost, this was not something to take lightly. Starting with a clean sheet of paper they chose well-known designer Howard Darrin to style their cars, both would be essentially the same apart from some trim items. From an engineering point of view, although they considered such technically advanced ideas as front-wheel drive, torsion bar suspension and unit construction, they opted to follow the convention as established by the rest of the American motor manufacturers, that is, a body-on-frame with front engine and rear wheel drive. Only the aforementioned Tucker chose to be the maverick. Where the rest of Detroit's offerings were merely warmed over pre-war cars, with the exception of Studebaker, the Kaiser and Frazers were the first of a new breed as far as styling was concerned. Darrin successfully predicted in 1946 the coming slab-sided style that would emerge internationally in 1950 as the style of the future. K-F was also a pioneer in America of the fibreglass bodied sports car when in 1953 they released the unusually-styled Kaiser-Darrin with its sliding doors. Needless to say the conservative American buyers did not warm to that! K-F even pioneered the hatchback concept with their Traveller range, another feature that was ahead of its time. By the mid-50s with plummeting sales and mounting losses K-F joined forces with Willys Overland which doubled their range of vehicles on offer but it was not long before car production was moved to South America where it continued for many years. Today we have the legacy of Joe and Henry and their automobiles and in particular the Kaiser-Darrin sports car of which few have survived. Including are road tests, new model intros plus historical articles. Models covered: Manhattan, four- & six-cylinder Henry Js & Corsair, Willys Aero Wing, Ace, Eagle, Bermuda, Excalibur & Kaiser-Darrin 161 sportscar.

English: Presented for the first time to the general public at the Paris Motor Show, October 7, 1948, the 2 CV Citroën is part of the history of the French and European car as a separate car. After forty-two years of a busy career, its production ceased in July 1990 in the Citroën plant in Mangualde. But the 2 CV is not dead for all that. Indeed, it remains forever in the memories of those who have used it. With her, they went every morning on the way to work. They took her all around the world, playing with difficult situations across the continents of the world. Today, the 2 CV Citroën is a true symbol that brings together around it many generations of fans. A real historical monument to the French automotive landscape, this little rustic car, which has never aged, remains terribly contagious.

English: With the 2 CV, it was believed to have reached the pinnacle of the Spartan automobile. We were mistaken. Citroen could still do better in austerity. On the same basis, two years after the sedan, the utility van version is launched. Out of time and fashions, this little dromedary of the road will roll his bump indefatigably for twenty-eight years, from 1950 to 1978, without noticeable changes. La Fourgonnette will be manufactured all over the world and sold virtually without advertising. It appears hardly in a few catalogs. Perfectly adapted to all climates, with its air-cooled engine, it is suitable for developing countries, because it is sober and economical. Finally, its suspension does wonders on all terrains. Like her big sister the 2 CV, this faithful friend of globe-trotters will participate in many raids around the world. Unbeatable, discreet, indispensable, impossible to copy, nothing has replaced it today. Many users regret its simplicity and its love rating with collectors is constantly climbing.

English: In 1933, the business of André Citroën experienced serious difficulties. It has just rebuilt and completely modernized its factory in the Quai de Javel in less than five months, without ever disrupting production, and takes up the most amazing industrial challenge. "The one who prevents Louis Renault from sleeping" plans to launch a truly revolutionary automobile that will give him years ahead of the competition. But it must be done quickly because the situation is getting worse. In March 1933, he hired a young engineer named André Lefebvre who was "bored" at Renault. For some time now, he has been working on a front-wheel drive car. On April 18, 1934, Traction Avant was presented to the dealers and the first sales took place the following month. But it lacks focus and the financial situation of the factory does not recover. Fueled by bankruptcy, André Citroën must leave his factory at the house Michelin, his biggest creditor. Worn out and tired, he died on July 3, 1935 without having seen the triumph of his latest creation. The new masters of the quai de Javel will complete the development of this Traction which he had so much desired. Its history ends only on July 18, 1957, when the last copy leaves the assembly lines of the quay of Javel.

La Ford T & A de mon père Ford
La Ford T & A de mon père Ford
French-language text. If there is a hierarchy in the world history of the development of large-scale automobile, the model Ford T, declared car of the twentieth century, is undeniably at the top of this ranking. Produced between 1908 and 1927 with more than 16 million copies, it made the fortune of its progenitor, Henry Ford, and fought, before anyone else, the notion - now obsolete - of the automobile object of luxury and privilege of the privileged. On Friday, December 2, 1927, the Ford Type A carries the heavy responsibility of replacing the mythical but aging Ford Model T. The design office this time develops the project from a white sheet: it comes out a machine otherwise Modern, in agreement, both in style and technique, with the late 1920s. Henry Ford and his son, Edsel, are definitely reassured about the future of the newcomer: 400,000 orders are quickly registered and close to 5 million units pass the gates of the factory before the end of the manufacture in 1932. This work retraces the commercial career, the different models of the catalogs, vintage by vintage, the special bodies and the genesis of these two Vehicles that have forever marked the history of the Ford Motor Company.
